Lyrics to my remix of Drake’s “Crew Love” by Shanelle Gabriel

Turn up the radio/ Turn it up just like before/ Every week its the same thing/ Does the record ever stop for you?/ Tell mr is this what you wanna do?/ Who you think’s controlling you?/ Cause yo body ain’t your own, no/ Your body, body ain’t your own, no/ Sista/ I ain’t tryin to shame ya/ just letting you know that your power’s in danger/ Trying to numb your pain while dudes are tryin to play ya./ Consent on your own terms/ not for the game, yea./ Mind ya mind./ They tryin to control ya shine/ Patriarchy it can be internalized/ Make your sexuality your own design/ Cause it seems like... seems like...

Like you’re loving the crew

Loving the crew

Loving the crew

You’re loving the crew

Loving the crew

Loving the crew

But do they love you?

Your guards down/ his cards up/ he's the player and the dealer/ texting him in caps cause you mad at how he treats ya/ think you’re gonna win when he's in charge of the game/ made you think you’re special then he forgot your name/ this ain’t sexual oppression/ nothing wrong with doing you/ but it ain’t liberation if you think sex can heal you/ tryin to sleep with a star so you can be one/ left your constellation/for walks of shame with the sun/ Quote Amber and Kardashian/ hmmm/ Like they aren't the exceptions/ the average chick falls quick from recollection/ two seconds after he loses his erection./ Addicted to attention want the spotlight/ don't fight for the right to self-objectify/ don't expect to get pixie dust from these guys/ baby, Tinkerbell didn't need Peter to fly

Trying to be a 10/ getting treated like a one/ They don't call you for dates/ They call you for fun/ cause you just a game to them

I want better for you/ you gotta want it too / I wish you could love yourself instead of loving the crew

I want better for you/ fellas are guilty too / learn to love yourself before loving the crew.

Recap: 3/22 Show at The Cutting Room NYC by Shanelle Gabriel

Hello!

It was a great time this past weekend at The Cutting Room NYC! I had such a blast performing with such an amazing band: Shoutout to Nate Jones on bass, Walt on guitar, Divine on Keys, Kamaala for always being the dopest background singer a gal could ask for.

While I did mostly songs and poems from my album, AIM HIGH, the biggest treat in my opinion was closing the show with Pharrell's "Happy." People were on their feet jamming and clapping and singing along. It was simply great having so many people there showing love!

Here are some pictures:

Damn Near... The Lyrics by Shanelle Gabriel

As we prepare for the release of the AMAZING video for "DAMN NEAR" (to be premiered on August 15th, the same day as my HUGE show at Aloft Brooklyn), here are the final lyrics to it.

This is definitely one of my favorite songs on my album AIM HIGH.

DAMN NEAR
You've been the spring in my step

7 months of intimate breaths

You said I'm the one but not yet

(You might be my next regret)

Priority to me

Yet you can't say the same for me

Sayin what will be will be

(Like we don't shape our own destinies)

Baby, you said I'm damn near your everything

As if damn near is comforting

Got my heart on string

On your words dangling

Given you the world

I don't understand

Why I'm not your girl

And you're not my man

But I'm damn near it

Ain't that some...

Hook:

Damn near (4x)

Ain't enough

"Tired of orbiting around your love but never landing/ Made you my galaxy/ Thought our stars would come crashing together but/ you got me drifting./ You know what..."

My patience is running thin

You say wait but I don't think I can

Asking me to give you all of me

(Like getting half of you should make me happy)

You say what did I expect

Well we didn't DAMN NEAR have sex

My heart you didn't damn near protect

You're just another regret

And I'm supposed to act like it's all fine

When damn near's just a freaking waste of my time

Damn near doesn't even make you mine

This is it, it's the last time I settle for…

Hook

Ooh, I want it all baby (repeat 8x)

Collecting broken women to make yourself whole

This type of game I pray gets old

This kinda love, you can't afford

It's high risk but high reward

Behind the Scenes of my video shoot for "DAMN NEAR" by Shanelle Gabriel

Since the release of AIM HIGH, a LOT of people have been loving the song "Damn Near" (myself included). Shoutout to Chris Theory on the track...

That said, I recently shot my FIRST MUSIC VIDEO! After years of being in everyone else's video (from Q-Tip to Jadakiss to my boy Troy Ave), it's finally time. I was blessed to work with a good friend of mine and great film maker Gartharie D Broadie on making my lil ole treatment make sense and come to life. Special thanks to the good folk at Therapy Wine Bar in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn for being one of the locations we shot at. Much love to my cast: Olu (fitness and nutrition guru who transformed into an actor for me), Krystal Garner (accomplished model and my Soror), and Q aka Quanasia (the amazing stylist for the entire video who doubled as my pianist when other plans didn't work out). Thank you to my niece Janae for being a great assistant on the shoot, and to my friend and fellow poet Ashley Straughn who came through as well.

Look for the video to be released at the end of July!
